During Gallo-Roman times the attractions of the River Seudreturned the village into a small fishing town on a hill near the present castle. As commerce developed, attractive low-rise houses began to replace modest huts. Tiday Mornac-sur-Seudre is a centre for oyster and salt production. The Old Town is crisscrossed by alleys leading to the the port.
