The city of Bordeaux (33 Gironde, Aquitaine) hosts its annual “Bordeaux Fete le Vin” (Bordeaux Wine Festival) from 14 – 18 June 2018. (every 2 years)

In 2018 the Tall Ships Regatta will leave from Liverpool (where the city hosts a UK version of Bordeaux Fete le Vin 25-28 May 2018); then make a stop in Dublin and end with the grand finale in Bordeaux to coincide with the Bordeaux Wine Festival.

Visitors can also take advantage of an outstanding programme to discover the architectural beauty of Bordeaux (listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO), its cultural assets and surrounding vineyards, as well as the many attractions of the Aquitaine.A previous Bordeaux Wine Festival paid tribute to Bordeaux’s francophone twin city, Quebec, with a series of special events and shows and a special pavilion devoted to this North American city.

In years gone by, I confess to finding both the city and the wine a little “stuffy” and unapproachable – but in the last 10 years the city has rejuvenated itself – and the vineyards have recognised the need to be more welcoming to potential customers who prefer to buy direct. Of course, there are many fine wines which are beyond most people’s everyday budget, but the sheer volume of wine made in this region ensures that there are always good, interesting wines on offer at affordable prices.
One way of exploring is with the Festival’s Tasting Pass, which enables holders to enjoy a comprehensive introduction to wine and meet the winegrowers in 8 pavilions featuring the following groups of appellations: Saint Emilion, Fronsac Lomerol, Medoc, Graves, dry white and rosés of Bordeaux, & Bordeaux Superieur….

A little more expensive, but still looking great value is the Vineyard Pass – which includes air conditioned coach transport, English-speaking tour guide and a visit to three different wine estates or heritage sites, with wine tasting and Lunch. Prices vary depending on the itinerary and vineyards visited – but this could be a great birthday or retirement present for a wine-lover.!
