The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde (La basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde) is in Marseille (13 Bouches-du-Rhône, PACA)
Suspended between sky and sea and affectionately known as the Good Mother (la Bonne Mère) by the locals, the Basilica has stood guard over the city of Marseille and its seafarers since the second half of the 19th Century.
There is also a restored cross (Croix de Camargue) which now serves as a Monument to Mariners (Monument des Marins)
Initially a small chapel on a hill above Marseille, the site is now a revered Basilica and icon for the people of Marseille and the site of a popular annual pilgrimage on Assumption Day every year (15th August).
The Basilica has been voted as one of the top places to visit in France, which the French like to visit! (France2 TV)
