The Independent (7 Jan 2006) has a good article on the Ariege, a little-known area south and west of Toulouse. "Novelist Kate Mosse braves chill Pyrenean winds to tour the land of the Cathars, whose grottoes sheltered resistance fighters and which even today enjoys a wild, remote charm". We travelled through it one day last summer, visiting the town of Foix (09 Ariege, Midi-Pyrenees) on the back road route from Limoux to Agen and promised ourselves a return visit to explore the ruggedly beautiful and quiet landscape - see http://travel.independent.co.uk
